Trek Overview

Duration: 5–7 hours
Vegetation: Forest

After breakfast, your guide will pick you up and drive to Ngongongare Gate, the entrance to Arusha National Park. Along the way, you will pass scenic farmlands and, in some cases, stop for wildlife viewing.

Registration and Trek Start

Upon arrival at the gate, complete park registration and final equipment checks. Then, begin your trek at a pole-pole (slow and steady) pace, which is ideal for acclimatization. As a result, you will have plenty of time to enjoy the surroundings and spot wildlife.

Forest Trek and Wildlife Encounters

The first day’s hike feels like a walking safari through lush montane forest. As you follow the trail, you will cross the Ngarenanyuki River and pass small waterfalls at the base of Mount Meru.

Along the way, you may spot:

  • Reticulated giraffes
  • Zebras and waterbucks
  • Cape buffaloes
  • Various forest bird species

In addition, an armed ranger will accompany you throughout the trek, ensuring safety and providing guidance.

Arrival at Miriakamba Hut

Depending on your pace, you may take either a shorter or longer route to Miriakamba Hut (2,500 m). By late afternoon, you will arrive at the hut, where you can relax and enjoy sunset views. Afterwards, settle in for dinner and an overnight stay.

Trek Overview

Duration: 4–5 hours
Vegetation: Forest / Alpine Desert Transition

After breakfast, continue trekking along the forested slopes of Mount Meru. As you ascend, the landscape gradually changes from dense forest to alpine desert. Along the way, keep an eye out for birds and small forest wildlife.

Ascent to Saddle Hut

Follow the trail steadily as you climb toward Saddle Hut (3,500 m). This section becomes steeper; however, the pace remains slow to support proper acclimatization. Upon arrival, enjoy a well-deserved hot lunch and take time to rest.

Optional Acclimatization Hike to Little Meru

In the afternoon, you may choose to hike to Little Meru (3,820 m). This short acclimatization trek is highly recommended because it helps your body adjust to the altitude. In addition, it offers:

  • Panoramic views of Mount Meru’s inner crater
  • Clear sights of the surrounding landscapes
  • Excellent photo opportunities, including distant views of Mount Kilimanjaro

Afterwards, descend back to Saddle Hut for relaxation.

Evening Rest and Summit Preparation

Later in the evening, enjoy an early dinner at the hut. Then, prepare for the midnight summit attempt. Most hikers go to bed by around 7:00 pm to ensure enough rest before the long and challenging ascent.

Highlights:

  • Optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru
  • Stunning views of Mount Meru crater and surrounding valleys
