Day 2: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut – Enter the Rainforest
Departure and Arrival at Marangu Gate
After an early breakfast and a final briefing, you will drive approximately two hours to the Marangu Gate of Kilimanjaro National Park. Upon arrival, registration is completed, and your adventure officially begins. This is your gateway to experiencing the lush and diverse ecosystems of Africa’s highest peak.
Hiking Through the Montane Rainforest
The trail gradually ascends through dense montane rainforest, alive with the calls of birds and playful monkeys, including the rare Colobus monkey. Towering eucalyptus and camphor trees create a green canopy overhead, offering both shade and a sense of immersion in nature. As you continue, every step brings new sights, sounds, and opportunities for nature photography.
Side Trip to Maundi Crater
Along the way, you will take a short side trip to Maundi Crater, which provides panoramic views across Northern Tanzania and into Kenya. This is an ideal spot to pause, capture stunning photos, and appreciate the scale of the surrounding landscapes before continuing your ascent.
First Overnight Stop: Mandara Hut
By the end of the day, you will reach Mandara Hut, your first overnight stop, situated at 2,700 meters (8,875 feet). Here, you can relax, enjoy the views, and prepare for the next stage of your Kilimanjaro trek.
Elevation: 1,860m (6,100ft) → 2,700m (8,875ft)
Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Montane forest
Day 3: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut – Enter the Heathlands
Leaving the Rainforest Behind
Leaving the lush rainforest behind, today’s hike ascends into the open moorlands of Kilimanjaro. The scenery dramatically changes as the dense greenery gives way to wide, sweeping landscapes. Along the way, you will enjoy stunning views of Mawenzi and the towering summit of Kibo, Kilimanjaro’s iconic peak.
Crossing the Heathlands
The trail passes through expansive heathlands, dotted with giant lobelias and groundsels, some of Kilimanjaro’s most iconic high-altitude flora. As you climb, the air becomes thinner, and breathing may feel more challenging. This signals your body’s gradual adaptation to the higher altitude.
Arrival at Horombo Hut
By late afternoon, you will reach Horombo Hut, located at 3,700 meters (12,200 feet). The surrounding peaks and valleys provide a breathtaking backdrop for photography and rest, making it the perfect spot to recharge before the next day’s ascent.
Elevation: 2,700m (8,875ft) → 3,700m (12,200ft)
Distance: 12 km (7.5 miles)
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Heathland
Day 4: Horombo Hut – Acclimatization Day
Acclimatization at Horombo Hut
Today is a crucial acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, giving your body time to adjust to higher altitudes. This rest period helps reduce the risk of altitude sickness and prepares you for the challenging summit ahead.
Optional Hike to Mawenzi Hut
For those seeking adventure, a guided day hike to Mawenzi Hut (4,600m / 15,100ft) is available. Along the way, you can observe high-altitude flora and fauna, capture photographs of sweeping landscapes, and experience the dramatic changes in vegetation as the trail climbs higher.
Meals and Rest
Meals are provided at the hut, with lunch either packed for your hike or served on-site, depending on your preference. Take this time to rest, hydrate, and build stamina for the upcoming summit attempt. This day is essential for ensuring your body is well-prepared for the final push to the top of Kilimanjaro.
Elevation: 3,700m (12,200ft) → 4,600m (15,100ft) if hiking to Mawenzi Hut
Hiking Time: 3–5 hours (optional day hike)
Habitat: Alpine moorland
Day 5: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut – Enter the Alpine Desert
Trek from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
After breakfast, you will begin the trek to Kibo Hut, passing the last natural watering point along the trail. This marks the start of a dramatic change in scenery as the terrain shifts from heathland to barren alpine desert, often described as a “moonscape.”
Exploring the Alpine Desert
The landscape here is truly surreal, with vast expanses of rocky ground, minimal vegetation, and otherworldly vistas. The stark beauty of this environment is unlike anything else in the world, offering a sense of adventure and anticipation for the final push to the summit.
Arrival at Kibo Hut
By evening, you will reach Kibo Hut, located at 4,700 meters (15,500 feet). Here, you can enjoy dinner, rest, and prepare for the final summit ascent, which begins in the middle of the night. Take this time to conserve energy, hydrate, and mentally prepare for the challenging climb ahead.
Elevation: 3,700m (12,200ft) → 4,700m (15,500ft)
Distance: 9 km (5.5 miles)
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Day 6: Summit Day – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Horombo Hut
Early Morning Summit Attempt
The most challenging and rewarding day of your Kilimanjaro trek begins very early, typically between midnight and 2:00 AM. Equipped with headlamps, you will ascend steep scree and rocky paths in near darkness, guided carefully toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. This early start allows you to tackle the climb when temperatures are cold but the trail is less crowded.
Reaching Uhuru Peak
From Gilman’s Point, the journey continues to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters (19,340 feet). As the sun rises, breathtaking panoramic views unfold over Kilimanjaro’s peaks, glaciers, and the vast Tanzanian plains. This is a moment to celebrate your accomplishment and capture unforgettable photographs at the roof of Africa.
Descent to Horombo Hut
After celebrating at the summit, you will descend to Kibo Hut for lunch and a short rest. Then, the trek continues down to Horombo Hut, where you can finally relax and reflect on the incredible achievement of reaching the top. Summit day is long and physically demanding, requiring endurance, proper layering against cold temperatures, and determination at every step.
Elevation: 4,700m (15,500ft) → 5,895m (19,340ft) up / 3,700m (12,200ft) down
Distance: 6 km (4 miles) up / 15 km (9 miles) down
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours up / 5–6 hours down
Habitat: Alpine desert
Day 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate – Descent and Celebration
Final Descent to Marangu Gate
After breakfast, begin the final descent from Horombo Hut down to the Marangu Gate. The trail gradually passes through open moorlands before re-entering the lush rainforest. At lower elevations, the path can be wet and muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles are recommended for a safe and comfortable hike.
Return and Reflection
Upon reaching the park gate, you will be met by your vehicle and driven back to Arusha or Moshi, or directly to your airport for departure. This day provides a wonderful sense of accomplishment, as well as time to reflect, celebrate with your guides and porters, and take final photographs of Kilimanjaro’s stunning lower slopes.

It is customary to show appreciation for your support team, as the guides and porters have played an essential role in your summit success. This final day is a perfect way to conclude your Kilimanjaro adventure with gratitude, reflection, and celebration.
